Information about the Dropout Survey

What is the aim and what is the content of the Dropout Survey? How is the survey organised and how is the data used? Here you can find the answers.

Aim of the Dropout Survey

The aim of the Dropout Survey is to gain valid information about the reasons for de-registration and the further career of the former students. The data obtained will be an important contribution to the quality development of the courses offered and the study conditions, as well as to the improvement of the counselling and service facilities at TU Darmstadt. This will help prevent avoidable dropout and change of higher education institutions.

Contents of the Dropout Survey

The Dropout Survey includes questions on the following topics:

  • Retrospective evaluation of the discontinued degree programme and the university
  • Reasons for de-registration
  • Personal and professional situation before and during the studies and after dropping out
  • Socio-demographic information

Organisation of the Dropout Survey

All former students who left TU Darmstadt between October 2022 and September 2023 without graduating will be invited to take part in the survey. The field phase will take place in the winter semester 2024/25 from October to February.

The Dropout Survey – like the Alumni Survey – is part of the project Study Programmes and Professions in Hesse, which is commissioned by the Hessian Ministry of Higher Education, Research, Science and the Arts. It is carried out as part of the nationwide Graduate Study Cooperation Project (KOAB) and coordinated by the Institute for Applied Statistics (ISTAT)

Usage of the survey data

The results of the Dropout Survey and the Alumni Survey will be used for analyses on the topics of study conditions and academic success, as well as academic and professional careers of the former students and graduates.

The data obtained from the Dropout Survey contributes to the identification of study problems throughout Hesse. This information can be used as a basis for the further development of study and teaching, as well as counselling and service offers at TU Darmstadt and other institutions of higher education in Hesse.

Further information about data usage and data protection in the Dropout Survey can be found in our FAQ
