Activate! Implementing Active Learning and Student-Centered Teaching
Student-centered teaching and learning (SCTL) gained importance over the past 20 years. It enhances collaboration and communication in the classroom and makes use of exercises and working phases in courses. Often referred to as active learning, research has shown that active learning increases the performance significantly. Therefore it’s time for you to balance between SCTL and traditional teaching approaches of teacher-centered methods of instruction (also referred to as direct instruction) for your courses while keeping time budget and a tight schedule in minds.
On day one, we will focus on the basics of SCTL and active learning and how to implement those in lectures and seminars in on-site teaching. On day two you will have the chance to try active learning and SCTL methods in an online setting.

Learning outcomes: The participants will be…
  • able to reflect advantages and challenges during the implementation of SCTL,
  • motivated to use student-centered methods in their courses,
  • able to use methods so that students are more attentive, learn more effectively and hence evaluate the course positively.
