Written Examinations
Examinations play an important role in university studies, both for the assessment of achieved learning outcomes and as a means of directing students’ learning efforts. Specifically in STEM subjects, very often written exams are used. In this workshop, we provide an opportunity for you to analyze your examination questions and a chance to get to know new types of tasks for such exams.
For this purpose, we begin by looking at typical student difficulties in STEM subjects and discuss their implications for the design of exams. Subsequently, you will reconsider the intended learning outcomes of your courses and reflect on how these can be mapped onto examinations. In the end you will be able to develop your own approach to exams. The facilitators will provide their own insight and experience from a variety of STEM disciplines.

Learning outcomes: The participants will be able to…
  • reflect on the purpose and requirements of examinations,
  • evaluate examination tasks with respect to their intended learning outcomes,
  • are familiar with various types of questions that allow to assess conceptual understanding among students in their respective subjects,
  • appreciate the range of possible tasks (even) in written examinations.
